Signal 97.4 FM went on air in 1994 from a single-room studio above a record shop. The transmitter was secondhand, the desk was borrowed, and the first playlist was a mix tape someone left on the windowsill. None of that mattered, because the city tuned in and never really tuned out.
Today we broadcast across the metropolitan area, stream to 180+ countries, and still programme every hour by hand. No algorithm decides what plays at 2am on Signal. A person does — someone who was up at midnight wondering if that track was the right call.
